Description

Introduction to Alternative Jewellery Techniques

Class Date: Thursday April 18, 25, May 2, 9th

Time: 6:00 to 9:00pm

Instructor:  Jennifer Wolfe / Sonia Sparling

Class Outline: This class introduces students to alternative jewellery making techniques such as cold connections (eg.riveting), etching, using the hydraulic press and combining them with silver and alternative metals such as titanium.

Students will be given the opportunity to follow suggested projects or create unique pieces of their own.

Titanium – Using a torch or controlled electric voltages through an anodizer, students create a rainbow of colours. Students will explore how the titanium can be finished as earrings, bracelets or pendants, or as an element that can be incorporated into a design using other metals.

Etching – Etching enables you to transfer an image directly on the metal by using a PNP resist to create a relief effect without the use of hand tools.

Riveting/Cold Connections – A cold connection is a different ways to attach metal without the need of any heat. This is great if you don’t have access to soldering tools or soldering just isn’t possible for you or your design.

Hydraulic press – The hydraulic press can form metal, add patterns and textures, help create hollow forms and make quickly repeatable shapes.

Students can expect to walk away with 2-3 pieces of completed work depending on complexity with the 15 grams of silver included in the course fee.  Additional silver is available for purchase if needed.
