Introduction to Casting
Class Date: Saturday / Sunday July 16/17th
Time: 9:30 – 4:30pm
Instructor: Jennifer Wolfe / Katlyn Sumpton
During this creative 2-day workshop, students will get hands-on experience experimenting with 3 different casting techniques. We will introduce students to Splash Casting, Broom Casting and Lost Wax casting.
Day 1 – Students will experiment with Splash Casting and Broom casting. They will also make a love knot ring from wax and carve a basic wax ring for casting on Day 2.
Day 2 – Students will cast their 2 waxes via Vacuum casting and spend the day making finished pieces of jewellery from the 3 different casting techniques
Splash Casting is a jewellery casting process of pouring molten sterling silver or gold into water to create unique and organically shaped cast forms. These cast forms can then be turned into finished pieces of jewellery like earrings or pendants.
Broom Casting is an easy, low-tech method of making beautiful freeform shapes, very reminiscent of stalagmite and stalactite.
Molten silver is poured into a wet straw broom. It is a process where you will get a different result each time you do it which makes every piece unique.
Lost Wax Casting
Students will get hands-on experience carving a wax model. You will learn how to use an electric wax pen and how to carve and file wax models. This is a great opportunity to learn all you need to know to make jewellery using the lost wax casting process, from start to finish.
Students will leave the workshop with the 2-3 finished pieces of jewellery.
Maybe combine the last sentence of both the splash casting and bottom casting description into one final statement following the descriptions of these techniques…Something like: Both of these casting techniques result in completely unique forms every time you cast. These unique and fascinating forms can then be turned into finished pieces of jewellery like earrings or pendants.
With small class sizes you will have the opportunity to have in-depth lessons and more one-on-one assistance.
All of the materials and equipment are provided for this class and no experience is necessary.
Please wear close-toed shoes, comfortable clothes, your hair tied back.
Workshop Fee: $335.00 +HST per person, includes kit fee for materials, consumables.
